Back to School Pet Stress

It is back to school time. Pets sit and watch as families are preparing to get their kids back to school and some off to college. Pets that have been used to having more time with their younger family members are now left waiting for them to come home from school. Some pets can get stressed with changes in the environment which can cause different behavioral issues. Luckily Pet Hospital carries some products that can be used to help calm your cats and dogs.

For Dogs:  Nursing mother dogs naturally produce an appeasing pheromone. The pheromone provides reassurance to the puppies, helping them to feel safe and secure when encountering a new experience and unknown environments. Clinical studies have demonstrated that a synthetic analogue of the dog appeasing pheromone (D.A.P.) helps provide reassurance and comfort to puppies and dogs of all ages. Pet Hospital carries ADAPTIL products which contain D.A.P. These come in the form of an area spray, a room diffuser and a pet collar. Pet Hospital also uses some of these products in grooming, boarding and treatment areas of the hospital to help dogs feel secure while they are here visiting us.

For Cats: When a cat feels safe and comfortable in its environment., it rubs its head against the furniture, corner of walls or the bottom of curtains, leaving a substance called the facial pheromone. This pheromone specific to  cats, conveys a message of security and well being. Pet Hospital carries Feliway products  which is a synthetic copy of the pheromone and studies have shown that it comforts cats, helping them cope with environmental changes and stressful situations. Feliway comes in the form of an area spray, a plug-in room diffuser, and wipes made for smaller areas. The Feliway plug-in diffuser is used daily in Pet Hospital’s Cat exam room. The wipes and spray are also used at Pet Hospital on cat carrier and blankets to help Cats feel  more secure.

Pet Hospital also carries a variety of calming treats that are made with natural calming ingredients for dogs and cats. For pets that may need something a little stronger, we may recommend a visit with one of our Veterinarians for a behavioral consultation.

Pets are like family members. We want to be able to help them in any way that we can. If you have any questions regarding your pets, please feel free to call Pet Hospital and we will be more than happy to answer your questions.
